Fall 2015, Professor Eckstein
Assignment 2
Due: Thursday, September 24
For all questions, express your answers to 3
significant digits of precision and show your work.
Q1. Compute the amount of
storage needed for the following:
- A 20-page report with an average of 65 lines of text per
page, and an average of 90 characters per line. Express the result in binary-style KB.
- The COUNTY table from assignment 1, but containing information
on 3,100 counties. Assume that the ID number is a
long integer (the default form for "autonumber" fields). Express the result in binary-style
KB.
- An 8.5-by-11-inch document scanned at 300 dots per inch
(dpi), in
24-bit color. Express you answer in binary-style MB.
- 90 minutes of "1080p24" high- definition video: 1920 x 1080 pixels, 24 bits per pixel, and 24 frames per second (disregard any
accompanying audio). Express your answer in binary-style GB.
- An audio file containing of 60
minutes of music, with 2 channels, 48,000 samples per second, and 24 bits
per sample. Express
your result in binary-style MB.
Q2. Compute the compression factors in the following situations:
- A single-layer "Blu-Ray" disc holds 25 binary GB of data.
What is the compression factor would be required for such a disk to hold
the 90-minute video from Q1, part (d)?
- Suppose you use the MP3 algorithm to compress the audio file in Q1, part
(e) to 12.1 binary-style MB. What is the compression factor?
